Woodsia are rupicolous or terrestrial, drought resistant. Clustered fronds are herbaceous, lanceolate, once-pinnate or once-pinnate bipinnatifid, covered with hair or scales. Indusia are characteristic, they are located under sori, surrounding the receptacle, and deeply laciniate, like a ruff of hair.
